The roof on top of your commercial roof has a big job to do, and when it is properly installed, it will do it well. However, some issues can come along with either poor installation of a flat roof or the deterioration of a flat roof due to age. One of those issues just happens to be puddling or ponding water. It may not seem like such a big deal if you have a lot of water puddled up on top of the roof, but there are really bad repercussions that can come along with puddles of water overhead. Here is a look at some of the general problems that can occur.

1. Vegetation can take root on the roof.

Plants do not have to have soil to grow; they only need moisture and sunlight, which is going to be present on a roof where there is a standing puddle of water. Algae, wind-blown tree seed pods, and other plant life can make its way to your roof and start to grow. This can become a major problem if an overabundance of plants take root. You may even start to see plants overgrow your roof and make their way to other parts of the building.

2. Water can be attractive to insects and pests.

Water is naturally attractive to birds, but it is also an attractive thing to pests like rodents and insects. If you do not want pests to be attracted to your roof, it is best to go ahead and seek help with eliminating the issue right away.

3. Puddled water can freeze and generate bigger problems.

Frozen puddles of water will eventually melt when the temperatures warm, but these layers of ice can also compound if there is more precipitation. Layer after layer of ice on a flat roof can create a lot of problems. It is not unheard of for a roof to completely collapse because there is so much ice and snow that has accumulated and the structure is not designed to handle the weight.

4. Excess weight can lead to leaks.

The more water is allowed to stand in one place, the more pressure there is on that particular spot of the roof. Unfortunately, this undue stress can cause damage to the roofing materials and the underlying structure. This usually occurs if there is an excessive amount of water, but it can happen if the water is simply allowed to stand in one place for a long time.
