Most people don't think about your roof in the winter when it's covered in snow. They just think that the roof is going to stand up to the snow without any problems. However, that's not true. Snow is quite heavy, especially because the snow is full of moisture. That heavy snow can cause damage to your roof in several ways, including just being so heavy that it causes your roof to start to collapse. If you are worried about the damage that the heavy snow can cause, there are a variety of things that you can do to help protect your roof and keep that damage from happening.
One of the things that you can do is to get a roof rake. The roof rake is designed with a long telescoping handle and a flat blade at the end. All you have to do is to set the handle long enough that you can easily reach up to your roof and into the snowpack. All you have to do is to use the roof rake and start pulling the snow down and off your roof. You don't have to get it all off your roof, because generally once you scrape off the snow around the edges, the snow higher up the roof around the peak is going to start to fall off on its own. Your goal is to get as much snow as you can off your roof. It will lighten the load which can help to keep the damage from happening or leaks from forming in your roof.
Another thing that you can do is to have heat wires installed on your roof. These wires are designed to go on your roof near the edges. You don't want to have them exactly on the edges but instead, you want them to be installed two or three feet up from the edge. When you want to get rid of the snow, you can activate these wires, and they will heat up the snowpack, melt it off, and help to keep more snow from gathering on your roof, as well as keeping ice dams from forming.
If you are worried about the damage that snow can cause to your roof or has already caused to your roof, then you can call a residential roofing contractor and talk to them about what your options are, including getting your roof repaired.
